International Nurses Day was celebrated across the world on Sunday 12 May and was a chance to celebrate those within the nursing profession world-wide for their great commitment to care. Nurses are in every care pathway and International Nurses Day gives us the chance to recognise their contribution to patient care and shine a spotlight on the incredible work they do.

At CWPT, nurses make up about a quarter of our workforce, with around 1000 nurses being employed at the Trust. Their hard work truly helps us put patients at the heart of everything we do. To celebrate our amazing nursing colleagues, CWPT welcomed nurses, nursing associates and student nurses from across the Trust to an event at the Double Tree Hilton in Coventry on Friday 10 May.

Our celebrations included talks from keynote speakers from NHS England, as well as presentations from staff across CWPT about the fantastic work taking place in each service, including recruitment in our children and young people services, innovative uses of technology and digital methods in our learning disabilities services at Brooklands and more! A marketplace of stalls was also set up, so staff could learn more about other initiatives taking place across the Trust, and in the afternoon everyone got on their feet and joined in some laughtercise to beat the after-lunch slump!

We also presented the ‘Greta Chieza Award’, which was created in honour one of nurses who died during the COVID-19 pandemic. The award celebrates nurses and nursing associates who are natural leaders, empathetic, supportive, a vibrant spirit and are passionate about nursing. This year we had two winners and the award went to Annie Charlton, CAMHS Practitioner in our children and young people mental health services and Hannah Perkins, Clinical Lead in our learning disability and autism services. It was presented by Greta’s children in her memory.

Debbie Brown, CWPT’s Assistant Director of Nursing, said: “It was a fantastic day. The speakers were amazing and showed all the great work that is happening to support the people who use our services. I was overwhelmed by the energy in the room and very proud to be a nurse alongside such excellent peers.”

Mary Mumvuri, CWPT’s Chief Nursing Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said: “It is a privilege to bring so many of our nurses together to celebrate the incredible work they do and the vital role they play not just within our Trust but the wider NHS and health and social care systems.”

Acosia Nyanin, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for NHS England, said: “It was great to join the CWPT celebrations for International Nurses Day. When I think about the national strategy relating to population health, improving outcomes, and excellence in practice, CWPT demonstrated that today. What the team shared about the work that has been done in the last 18 months and the future work is so special. It’s so important that what’s being done nationally is also being done at the point of care locally, and I’m so proud of CWPT’s efforts in doing this.”
